Benefits & Responsibilities of Asylees

Asylee Benefits

  • Can live and work in the United States permanently
  • Asylum status for spouse and any unmarried children under 21
  • Can apply for Social Security card
  • Can apply for Green Card within one year
  • Can apply for refugee Travel Document (similar to a passport)
  • Eligible for need based government assistance, like welfare, Medicaid (medical assistance), disability, and food stamps
  • Other resettlement and job placement assistance – see “Resources” section for more information


Asylee Responsibilities

  • Cannot return to home country
  • Men between 18 and 26 must sign up for Selective Service
  • Must notify government of any change in address
  • Must pay taxes and follow all local and national laws
