Benefits & Responsibilities of Asylees
Asylee Benefits
- Can live and work in the United States permanently
- Asylum status for spouse and any unmarried children under 21
- Can apply for Social Security card
- Can apply for Green Card within one year
- Can apply for refugee Travel Document (similar to a passport)
- Eligible for need based government assistance, like welfare, Medicaid (medical assistance), disability, and food stamps
- Other resettlement and job placement assistance – see “Resources” section for more information
Asylee Responsibilities
- Cannot return to home country
- Men between 18 and 26 must sign up for Selective Service
- Must notify government of any change in address
- Must pay taxes and follow all local and national laws
